101: Introduction

An overview of the multi-billion dollar field of interior design, the impact it has on our lives and the various career opportunities that are available.

102: Color

Discussions on the various color theories, the psychological effect color has on people, trends and non-traditional use of color.

103: Lighting

Discover the impact light had on design, learn which types of lighting to use for different applications, learn to draw a lighting plan, and view the various styles of lighting that are available.

104: Floor Plans/Furniture Placement

Learn to optimize space and to layout furniture based on traffic patterns and lifestyle requirements. Draft floor plans to scale. IDI provides each student with a complete drafting kit.

105: History of Design/Furniture

Study the various architectural styles and how they developed. View a slide presentation of historic design periods and demonstrations on how to identify characteristics of historic pieces.

106: Elements of Design, Design Styles, Design Terminology

Become familiar with common terminology that is widely used within the industry. The terminology will aid a designer in both purchasing and negotiations. Gain understanding of the function furniture pieces are intended to serve.

107: Floor Coverings

Learn about quality, characteristics and function of carpeting, hardwood, tile, stone and linoleum. Optimize profits by understanding how to measure and install these products.

108: Wall Covering

Learn different applications for wall covering, how to measure wall covering and selecting the best wall treatment for each project.

109: Window Treatments

Gain an understanding of the various options available when selecting a window treatment that will serve the functional and aesthetic needs of the project.

Discussions on the basics of layouts for kitchens and baths, including floor plans, lighting and fixture options.

113: Finishes, Woods, Laminates/Presentation Boards

Hands-on examples of different fabrics, laminates and finishes give visual and textural distinctions; create presentation boards that will "wow" your client.


201: Fee Structuring, Mark-Ups and Discounts

Learn about the different fee structures and methods of charging clients, marking up prices on merchandise sales, and how to negotiate designer discounts.

202: Marketing for Clients and Selling Your Design

Identify and accurately target potential clients. Learn to budget and optimize advertising dollars. Explore different methods of promotion and advertising.

203: The Design Proposal

Develop an accurate and persuasive design proposal that will be financially rewarding and set the tone for a continued good client/decorator relationship. Learn the elements of written contracts and agreements.

204: The Client Interview

Discover how to ask the right questions and sell project ideas in order to get the job. View questionnaires and forms that uncover the needs and functions of the client when doing an inspection of the premises.

205: Trade Sources, Manufacturers, Library, Labor/Bathrooms

Build your own personal library of manufacturers and trades people; discussions on the basic layouts for bathrooms and design requirements.

206: Expediting, Forms and Procedures

Learn how to process and complete sales orders, purchase orders and maintain project control forms. Understand basic design bookkeeping systems for payables and receivables.

207: Suppliers' Library and Trade Wholesale Purchasing

Become adept at finding the right suppliers for each design job requirement.

208: Field Trip to the Pacific Design Center

Gain familiarity with the largest design resource center on the West Coast.

301-304: The Design Workshop

To test students' design and problem solving skills, they are assigned a specific design project to take from start to finish. Each project has its own set of challenges that students must meet.
